Fair season is here and I am relishing the lack of stress this year. See, this is my first fall doing psychic fairs only as a psychic and not as a vendor of Blue Dragon Beauty, or worse – trying to do both. Last year I was staying up till all hours of the night making product, putting on labels and generally freaking out. This year, I am sipping a glass of wine, listening to music and writing to you. This year is way better.
This month we have little articles and notes instead of any long articles. Personally, I've been feeling very into the writing short form. I think all the political ads and debates have fried my brain to the point were I can't hold any big ideas in my head. I need to nibble everything into bit-sized pieces.
This week we are supporting National Coming Out Week as well as the 10 year Memorial of the Mathew Sheppard Murder – he and I were the same age. Ten years ago I was finishing up my last quarter at YSU in Religious Studies, My only real course was BioMedical Ethics in American Public Life (everything else was crud that I hadn’t gotten around to but had to finish for graduation). We spent a lot of time talking about rights of privacy, AIDS, and abortion… and in the middle of all that was this brutal murder of a boy the same age as me, also gay and it scared the hell out of me.
I've been reflecting on how amazingly lucky I've been. I've never been gay bashed, my family has been quite accepting and I'm very at peace with my sexuality. These days I often find it more awkward and strange to tell people I'm a psychic. When you say, "I'm Gay," no one ever says, "I dunno, I'm a skeptic. Prove it."
I think many of us in the metaphysical community feel like we need to hide who we are. I meet so many people who tell me their families think they are crazy for believing in ghosts or the supernatural. People who don’t talk about their spiritual journey with family, lovers or spouses and ask me what they should do? Often it is married women, with tears running down their faces, who ask me how they can save their marriage when their husbands think they are crazy for studying Reiki. I pass over the tissues and listen as they struggle with coming out as different. Worse yet are the readings where people have stayed relationships – lying about who they are and what they believe – and learn to hate those they used to love.
You have to be true to yourself and not lie about who you are. Yes, you can have privacy and not shout from the rooftops, but you must be honest with yourself and those you love if you want to continue a spiritual journey and live a meaningful life. So this week, come out to someone you love be it about your sexuality or your beliefs and take a little of the weight off your soul.
This Month we have Tammie Crosby on the Universal Light Expo, Miss Bonnie with Horror-Scopes, and Upcoming Events. Also, check out the Forum (I think I fixed the bug that was giving some of you an error message when you tried to get to the Forum) I have a review of ScareFest in Lexington, KY, A short review of the first book in the Dresden Files, and the story of how I ended up watching the VP debates at the Boardman Republican Headquarters.
I also have some new things happening at my personal site – Enter to win a free psychic reading and see me demonstrate the yoga Sun Salutation. You can check it out at www.johnmichaelthornton.com
We are also looking for people to write book reviews for American Metaphysics. If you are interested,
