Gemstone Identification List--A Print E-mail
Written by Tammie Crosby
Wednesday, 07 December 2005

I am beginning a list of Gemstone identifications. Most of these are ones which crafters and jewelers make into jewelry, so from time to time I will feature pieces which I have made in the blog to illustrate that particular gemstone.

The list today only encompasses the A's and I have no pictures ready yet...but keep checking back and I will get things posted as time permits.

I am not on the road during this season so please expect more postings, pictures and sale items to be featured.

Gemstone Identification List:

Abalone - A type of Sea Shell with brilliant iridescent colors.

Agate, Apricot - This stone is a pastel orange to cream, usually banded.

Agate, Banded Carnelian - Orange pink to bright orange with banding or spots makes this stone slightly different that the one above.

Agate, Blue Lace - This soothing agate is a light blue with lace banding.

Agate, Blue Chalcedony - This stone is to Blue Lace agate as porcelain is to china...a delicate blue with a few thin flat seams of lace or no lace at all.

Agate, Green Moss - This earthy agate contains mossy patterns in clear to white agate. (Please note that there is also a red moss variety which sometimes mixes with the green variety.)

Agate, Green Tree This stone is almost the same as the Green Moss patterns but is a more opaque white agate.

Agate, Turritella - This fossil stone features small spiral shells usually in brown agate.

Agatized Coral - These stones have the color range of beige, pink, red to brown often with coral patterns.

Amazonite - This stone is a bright to pastel blue-green with some white streaks.

Amethyst, Lilac - This type of amethyst is a translucent lilac.

Amethyst - Most of these range from a medium to dark purple.
Amethyst, Chevron - This type of Amethyst features white "chevron" striping in a medium to dark purple.

Apache Tears - These nodules or 'tears' are clear to translucent, smoky obsidian.

Aquamarine - The gem quality version of this stone is blue to green translucent, however, the non-gem quality variety may be more opaque with a bit more of a color range, including variations of the blue-green, even a beige/yellow green/blue.

Aventurine, Green - This stone is dark to medium green with flakes of mica.

Aventurine, Pink - This stone is a lighter color version of Red Aventurine and is sometimes called 'Peach Aventurine'.

Aventurine, Red - This striking stone is a sparkling burgundy red and is sometimes called 'Raspberry Aventurine'.

Aventurine, White - This little known stone is a silvery white with mica sparkles.
